Taking My Lead is dedicated to helping you and your dog speak the same language; their language, Canine, a language they understand and will thank you for, for the rest of their lives.
In the wild every pack of dogs has a Pack Leader, the Alpha. This dog will lead the pack, and the pack will follow. The Alpha will alert the others to danger, everything will be on their terms,affection, eating, walking. This Alpha will have respect from the followers in the pack. They will have a confident stance and an authoritative air about them.
Pack Leader is the role you should be aiming for with your dog. You want your dog to see you as their leader and themselves as the follower.
When you bring a new dog into your home, they will look to you for leadership. This is a natural expectation.
If you do not give your dog the leadership that they are looking for, then you may experience some of the following behaviourial problems:
- Pulling on the lead
- Incessantly barking
- Separation Anxiety
- Aggression or Nervousness
- Jumping up
- Chewing or destroying your home
- Uncontrollable barking when someone comes to the house
- Refusing to come when called
But, don’t worry because all of these behavioural problems can be easily solved.
The good news is that you can still have fun, love and play; your dog can even sleep on your bed, if you wish, and, just by re-establishing yourself as the Pack Leader, your dog will look to you for leadership and the behavioural problems will disappear.
Lead your dog with confidence and be the Pack Leader, and your dog will follow you and will be a lot happier for it. There is no need for shouting, getting angry and certainly no need for ever smacking your dog. This is a calm assertive energy that your dog will pick up on and understand.
Instinctively, your dog needs to take the lead role if they are not being lead by means they understand. Dogs need clear messages and clear guidance on behaviour and what is, and what is not, acceptable. I will show you how you can accomplish this and watch your dog turn from being either confused, nervous, dominant and "naughty" to being a happy well balanced dog that will follow you for life.
Dogs actually find the pack leader role quite stressful, and, once you know the language and the signs your dog is giving you, and you yourself become the pack leader, your dog will happily hand over their lead for you to take.
